Is 316L stainless steel tube magnetic?
People often think that magnets can adsorb 316L stainless steel pipes to verify their quality and authenticity. If they do not attract or have no magnetism, they are considered good and well deserved; If the inhaler has magnetism, it is considered a counterfeit product. In fact, this is an extremely one-sided and unrealistic method of identifying faults.
There are many varieties of stainless steel pipes, which can be divided into several categories according to their organizational structure at room temperature:
1. Austenitic type: such as 304 stainless steel pipe, 321 stainless steel pipe, 316L stainless steel pipe, 316Ti stainless steel pipe, 347H stainless steel pipe, 317L stainless steel pipe, 310S stainless steel pipe, etc;
2. Martensitic or ferritic type: such as 430 stainless steel pipes, 420 stainless steel pipes, 410 stainless steel pipes, etc;
Austenite is non-magnetic or weakly magnetic, while martensite or ferrite is magnetic.
The stainless steel pipes commonly used as decoration pipes are mostly austenitic 304 materials, which are generally non-magnetic or weakly magnetic. However, due to weak chemical composition or different processing conditions, they may also exhibit magnetism, but this cannot be considered counterfeit or unqualified. What is the reason for this?
As mentioned above, austenite is non-magnetic or weakly magnetic, while martensite or ferrite is magnetic, because composition segregation or improper heat treatment during exercise can form a small amount of martensite or ferrite structure in austenitic 304 stainless steel pipes. In this way, there will be slight magnetism in the 304 stainless steel tube.
In addition, after cold processing, the microstructure of 304 stainless steel pipes will also transform into martensite. The greater the deformation degree of cold processing, the more martensite transformation will occur, and the magnetic properties of the steel will also increase. It seems to be a batch of steel strips, producing Φ 76 tubes without obvious magnetic induction, producing Φ 9.5 tubes. Due to the large deformation caused by the bending, the magnetic induction is more obvious. The rectangular tube produced by the manufacturer has a larger deformation amount than the circular tube, especially in the corner part, where the deformation is more severe and the magnetic induction is more obvious.
